Deceased Name: SERVICES SET FOR PHILLIP KARON , 69, FRESNO VETERANS' ACTIVIST

Services for Phillip Karon, 69, of Fresno, a retired salesman and longtime activist for veterans' causes, will be 1 p.m. Monday at the John N. Lisle Chapel of the Lisle Funeral Home. Mr. Karon died Thursday. Born in Chicago in 1919, Mr. Karon came to Fresno in 1941 just before the start of World War II with the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Hammar Field where he played drums in an air corps band known as the Bombasies. The group, a swing band, played at Hammar Field and numerous USO gatherings during the early war years. He was later transferred to a military post near Lompoc, but returned to Fresno after the war and worked for Norman Rudy's variety stores. He eventually became manager of Rudy's store at Olive and Blackstone avenues.

He left the variety store to become a partner in the General Merchandising Corp., based in Los Angeles, in the early 1950s.

He later was sales manager for Fink & Scopp Home Furnishings in Fresno through the 1960s. He retired in 1972.

Mr. Karon was a reserve deputy for the Fresno County Sheriff's Department from the early 1960s through the 1970s. Mr. Karon also devoted much of his time to the Disabled American Veterans.

Both Mr. Karon and his wife worked closely with former Congressman B.F. Sisk, and later with Congressman Tony Coehlo, on DAV advisory committees. He was also a member of the DAV's State Legislative Committee.

He was a past president of the Greater Fresno Chapter 137 DAV and also a past commander of the California DAV.

He was a member of the VFW Ship No. 9814, Masonic Lodge No. 247, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Musicians Local No. 210.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Ruth; a daughter, Doris Lynn Bachman of Irvine; and two grandchildren.

The family requests rememberances be sent to the charity of choice.
